At Championship Martial Arts Maryville, we take immense pride in our students’ progress. Every belt earned is not just a piece of fabric—it represents growth, discipline, and achievement. However, we recently conducted a poll and heard your concerns about our evaluation and promotion process.
First, we want to say thank you for your feedback. We recognize that, at times, we haven’t done the best job of explaining why and how we promote students. So let’s pull back the curtain and provide some clarity.
Concern #1: Are Promotions Too Frequent?
Some families feel that quarterly testing comes too often. What many don’t realize is that we’ve experimented with different timelines in the past:
- Every two months – This was too frequent, leading to rushed progress and promotions that didn’t feel meaningful.
- Every six months – This was too long, causing students to lose motivation and disengage.
- Every three months (Quarterly) – This has proven to be the ideal balance, allowing students to stay motivated, make steady progress, and develop at a pace that keeps them engaged without feeling overwhelmed.
We’ve been teaching martial arts for decades, and experience has shown us that quarterly testing is the best structure for long-term success. Every student is different, but we’ve built a system that works for the vast majority of kids, helping them stay excited about their journey while still being challenged.
Concern #2: Is Promotion Just a Money Grab?
It’s natural for families to wonder why there’s a fee for promotion. The reality is that testing fees help us provide a high-quality, meaningful experience for your children. These fees cover:
✔️ New belts and awards – Every student earns their belt, and we provide a professional, well-organized promotion event.
✔️ A celebratory graduation experience – We want your child to feel like their hard work matters! A special event makes the achievement feel real and significant.
✔️ School operations and improvements – These fees allow us to continue offering a top-tier training environment.
We’ve also seen what happens when promotions are free. Students don’t take them seriously, families don’t prioritize attending, and a sense of entitlement develops. We refuse to let rank advancement become a participation trophy. Earning a belt is a big deal, and we are going to make sure it stays that way.
Concern #3: What Are the Expectations for Promotion?
Some parents feel uncertain about what skills their children need to demonstrate for promotion. Part of this is intentional—martial arts isn’t about simply “checking a box” to pass a test. We want our students focused on becoming martial artists, not just memorizing movements to get to the next belt.
That being said, we recognize that we can do a better job of showing you what we look for. To improve clarity, we are implementing:
📱 Our Training App – We already have an app that outlines rank-specific expectations. If you haven’t checked it out, now is the time!
📺 A New YouTube Series – We’re launching videos that break down what’s expected at each belt level, plus tips for at-home training.
👊 More In-Class Communication – Our instructors will now discuss expectations more clearly with students, and we’ll keep parents in the loop in the lobby.
We know what works best for students—sometimes even better than parents do (we say this with love!). Trust that our methods are designed to build strong, confident martial artists, not just belt collectors.
Final Thoughts: Trust the Process
We love that our families care deeply about their child’s martial arts journey. The best thing you can do as a parent is trust the process and know that every aspect of our curriculum is designed to bring out the best in your child.
Martial arts isn’t about rushing to black belt—it’s about developing discipline, confidence, and character along the way. We are committed to making every belt earned at CMA mean something—and that’s why we take promotions so seriously.
Thank you for being part of our CMA family. If you ever have questions, we encourage you to talk to us directly. Let’s keep growing together!
See you on the mats!
