  • A Parent's Role

    A Parent's Role

Today’s parents are soft. “Ouch! Right out of the gate Mr. C?” I’m sorry, but after two decades working with parents and as a parent myself I know this to be true. When I was a kid we rode bikes up to 20 miles away without helmets, or knee and elbow pads. We built tree houses and forts with booby traps to hurt our friends. We got stitches regularly. One kid in our friend group was wearing a cast at all times. We played video games that could not be “beaten.” They simply got tougher or faster until you inevitably died. We weren’t just disciplined. We were often hit with whatever the nearest wieldable object was whether it be a wooden spoon, ....

  • A Yellow Belt's Blessing

    A Yellow Belt's Blessing

This was recently written by one of our yellow belt adults. I wanted to share it with you so that you can see our program from a slightly different perspective. I am thankful that the mat is soft; That my muscles are getting stronger; And that I may hold onto the wall for 3 more years when we do slow-mo sidekicks. I am thankful for the tenets that get me through the day; For the camaraderie of fellow students; And for the much needed encouragement of instructors and senior students. I am thankful for the contagious humor of Mr. & Mrs. Church; For the fastest hour of my day (TA Class); And for ice and ibuprofen I am thankful that my children and I enjoy this amazing, ....

  • Martial Arts vs. Traditional Sports

Obviously since you are on a martial arts website reading a martial arts blog written by a life-long martial arts participant you can assume that I feel martial arts training is superior to traditional sports. However, I LOVE sports. I love playing them, watching them, reading about them. I love sports. So my goal today is to outline the main differences and give you a surprise twist ending. I probably shouldn’t have told you that yet. Anyway, here we go: Five Reasons Why Martial Arts Training is Superior to Traditional “Ball” Sports 1) You are judged on your effort and ability only!
Anyone who has played traditional sports knows that it only takes one mistake ....

  • I Love TAEKWONDO!

I LOVE taekwondo! In my opinion there is no better activity for you and your child to participate. Practicing the art is not only extremely fun but very beneficial as well. Now at this point I’m sure you are already aware of the health benefits such as improved flexibility, strength, and cardio performance. I’m also sure that you are aware of the discipline and self-control gained through training with us, especially for children. But those are just a few reasons why taekwondo is amazing. So here are my favorite reasons why EVERY person needs taekwondo training in their life. Teamwork
I was just talking to a parent during class last night about how the martial arts, and ....

  • Take Action!

Unlike my normal long-winded (Wait. I’m not talking. Long-typed? Long-worded? I don’t know.) blogs this entry is going to be short and sweet. Again I want to start with a question or two. Are you growing? What steps are you currently taking to improve? I am currently sitting in a busy hotel lobby in Orlando, FL. As I watch families anxiously getting ready to visit the parks again still exhausted from the day before I am typing away at my computer also exhausted from the day before. While these families were living it up on their dream vacation I was sitting in a hotel conference room for hours and learning new business skills from the best and brightest martial arts minds in ....

  • Who's the Boss?

Parents, if you are easily offended this may be a long tough read. Like all of you I have seen a change in this generation of children. They are more disinterested in school and activities. They struggle controlling their emotions and their responses to their emotions. They are slow to get motivated and quick to quit. They do and say things that “we would have never thought about when we were kids.” ( Yeah, I’ve heard you. Sounds like I’m talking about your kid doesn’t it?) However, working with children for well over two decades I’ve realized that kids are kids. They haven’t changed really. Parents have changed. Parenting philosophies have ....

  • 3 Questions

I was once told by an English professor to never start a paper with a question. So naturally being a questioner of authority and a bit of a smart a** (surprising, I know.) I began every paper that semester with a question, and here we are again. You see I believe that we learn through inquiring. The more questions you ask the more knowledge and information you get in return. But the real question is do we ask the right questions ? I once heard “there are no stupid questions, just stupid people who ask them.” Never wanting to be one of the “stupid people” I always try to ask the right question . For example, gentlemen, you know what happens when you ask your ....
